The system's performance is negatively impacted as the angle increases. It is advisable to maintain a low horizontal angle to ensure optimal accuracy. This is particularly important for countries with lower text font width / height ratio.
High angles can compromise system accuracy; therefore, it is advised not to exceed 30 degrees. Additionally, avoid mounting cameras beneath the license plate, as this may lead to the accumulation of rain on the lens.
For the LPR module to work effectively, the recognition area must be at least 200 pixels in height or width, and the aspect ratio must be at least 0.6 and no more than 2.
If the IR range is insufficient for the built in LEDs, or if the camera does not have built in IR LEDs, infrared sources external to the camera can be used. External IR sources must be placed close to the camera so that the reflected light can enter it. The IR source must be placed parallel to the camera so that the light falls on the part of the road that is in the camera's field of view.
A resolution of 1 megapixel (HD 720p) is sufficient for license plate recognition. Increasing the resolution beyond this will not improve the camera's ability to recognize license plates, as it may reduce sensitivity.
Choose a lens with a high aperture, preferably not less than F/1.4. If possible, go for a lens with a fixed focal length for better focus on license plates.
