Protecting public figures with AI powered gun detection

Graeme Woods
Global Business Analyst
We’ve recently had another tragic shooting of a public figure, with the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah reverberating around the globe.
Deaths from shootings whether related to street crime, political violence or at schools, are becoming all too common across the United States.
In addition to the human impact of deaths and long term injuries, shootings have other long term psychological and social effects. The long shadow of shootings falls over society, increasing fear and constraining engagement in our community, damaging our freedoms and our way of life.

â—Ź To understand the principles of protecting a public figure, consider three zones of protection, with the person to be protected being in the middle of three zones.
â—Ź The first zone extends out about five meters. Bodyguards are most effective at this range and can directly engage an attacker.
â—Ź The next zone extends from 15 to 50 metres, which can be controlled via a security perimeter or barriers, as long as the area has controlled access.
â—Ź The last zone extends out from 50 metres to 300 metres or more. This zone is the most difficult area to protect against because a sniper can be concealed on a roof, invisible from ground level.
A proficient military trained sniper can take a kill shot from more than 1000 metres, with some shots ranging up to 3,000 metres but assassination attempts of public figures are usually from a closer distance.
Drones can be used to patrol large areas protecting the vulnerable outer zone. These provide visibility of roof tops but it can be difficult for human operators to detect weapons when there are large crowds as well as multiple potential sniper vantage points to monitor. It is easy to miss a weapon. The answer to this is AI powered surveillance, which can automatically identify a gun and alert an operator in real time.
Scylla is an Austin, Texas based company dedicated to protecting human life through AI, and supplies military grade solutions across the world.
Scylla’s proven gun and active shooter detection solution can automatically identify all types of guns by from surveillance video from multiple sources, including drones and immediately alert security operators. Scylla enables rapid responses, helping to protect public figures, our community and our way of life.

Final Takeaway
While no security strategy can guarantee the prevention of an active shooter incident, implementing layered measures dramatically improves response time and saves lives. By combining armed security, robust physical safeguards, and AI-powered threat detection, building managers can transform preparedness from a plan on paper into real, actionable protection.
Scylla supplies AI powered video surveillance solutions that provide situational awareness to security teams by automatically detecting active shooting events, knives, smoke and fire, slip and fall and other critical events in real time across camera networks of any size.
